Google is honoring Nazia Hassan, the pop sensation of Pakistan with its doodle on her 53rd birthday. She left this world on August 13, 2000 at only 35 years of age after fighting with lung cancer.
In a statement Google wrote,
“When young Pakistani girls in the 1980s closed their eyes and clutched a pretend mic in their hands, swaying and singing, a major inspiration was Nazia Hassan. Hassan, sometimes referred to as the “Princess of Pop”, was a sensation the likes of which hadn’t been seen in the region in years. Young and graceful, with long flowing hair, she charmed the country by belting out favourite songs Disco Deewane and Boom Boom alongside her brother Zohaib.”
She was one of Pakistan’s most famous and shining stars in the 70s and 80s.The sister brother duo of Zohaib and Nazia Hassan went on to sell over 60 million records internationally. She was the first Pakistani artist to score a Filmfare Award.
According to the Google Doodle Information page,
“She was the first Pakistani singer to reach the British charts with her English version of ‘Disco Deewane’, called ‘Dreamer Deewane’.”
It’s been nearly 18 years since Nazia Hassan is no more with us but she continues to rule the world of music and the hearts of her fans globally.
